How we POSHED our bedroom!

Ditching a 30 year old paint job, learning to paint tile, and more!

We finally decided to get a head start on the master bedroom - painting and primping the whole room. The house was built in 1991, and the paint when we moved in was original to the home. The house belonged to a military couple: he was in the Navy, she was an opera singer, and they had cats. The house was later sold to a couple who also had cats, and then it was sold to us, who also have cats. Okay, enough with the cats. But, the spectacle of the bedroom paint was that the second home owners couldn't match the beige of the original paint, so the wall was covered with blotches of several variants of beige. Needless to say, my OCD was through the roof, and I wanted nice clean walls.

So, when my husband asked me what I wanted for our anniversary, I said, "I want you to paint our bedroom walls." Then I asked him what he wanted for our anniversary, and he replied, "I want you to paint the fireplace." And it was set! We didn't want to spend money hiring someone else, so we did it ourselves.

We went to Lowe's and purchased supplies: we went with Ultrawhite (Eggshell finish) for the walls, and matte black for the fireplace tile. We also purchased a primer for the fireplace. I highly recommend the paint we used because it is lead free, has minimal odor, and we were able to sleep in the room that night after keeping the room well ventilated! (I thought we would have had to sleep in the guest room, but our bedroom didn't smell like paint at all.) I've never painted a room, so I was pretty impressed.

For the walls

  1. Michael taped the baseboards, ceilings, and windows.

  2. Took down blind, and hideous valances.

  3. Painted first layer.

  4. Painted second layer.

  5. Painted third layer.

  6. Took tape off and did touch-ups.

Noob tip: We did have a tarp that caught drippings and splashes, but I would recommend just sealing the floors with plastic tarp that is sold at Lowe's. It's big and it's cheap, and it's far better than having to scrape paint off the floor after (trust us). Do it!

For the fireplace

  1. I sanded it down with 160 grain sandpaper - bought from Lowe's.

  2. I painted with primer, easy enough.

  3. I painted my first black matte layer with a small roller. Don't bother buying a roller, just use a paint brush.

  4. I painted my second layer with a sponge brush, concentrating on the grout! Make sure you get all the grout!

  5. I painted a third layer to make sure I got everything.

  6. I am currently waiting to see if I need to seal it. If you're sealing painted tile, wait 3 days before sealing it so that the paint can settle.

And voila! We have a brand new room, and one that feels more "us". I have not "set up" the decor (I will do a another blog post about it when I do), I am currently waiting for items to arrive. To get a glimpse of what the process looked like, follow my "home" stories on Instagram!

Some pictures from our project day, the amount of paint that Michael had on him - is pretty humorous!
